Welcome!

Welcome to another great year at Holy Spirit!

If you are interested in the back-to-school night information that was distributed, please email me letting me know. epusti@holyspirit-indy.org

As we begin the school year, the students are learning procedures for the school and the math classroom. Thus far, the students have been doing a great job in the classroom! I am so impressed with the way they are choosing to start off school. We hope to work hard and let it continue throughout the year!

Within the first week and a half of school, each grade has taken a pre-test. After looking at the completed pre-tests, I was able to adjust their lesson plans to best fit their needs. The sixth grade students are working in the Prime Time unit. They will learn the more in depth concepts of number theory. The seventh grade students are working with Variables and Patterns. They will be learning about linear equations and models, as well as graphing data and patterns. The eighth grade students are working in the Thinking with Mathematical Model unit. They will be reviewing the key concepts of linear equations, in order to help further build a background before moving into exponential and quadratic equations. They will work a lot with solving linear equations, as well.

I have a classroom Edmodo website. All students have returned a permission slip signed by a parent for this usage. Each student has also had a Syllabus slip signed by a parent, concerning the procedures and expectations of the classroom. If you need a copy of both, please email me.

If there are any additional questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you!

Week of 03-04-2013

Hello!

Although this has been a bit of a stressful week, the students dominated the ISTEP! While the students were hard at work, we worked swiftly in the math classroom. The sixth grade students began their new unit, Comparing and Scaling. This unit involves finding the area and perimeter of two dimensional objects. The seventh grade students did a fabulous job with their last unit projects. Also, they did great on their unit exams. They have began their new unit, Filling and Wrapping, which deals with the concepts of surface area and volume of three dimensional objects. The eighth grade students have began their new unit, Say It With Symbols. We have stepped away from the textbook for a bit, and have just worked on reviewing some key concepts. The students were each given a notice concerning ALEKS. This notice told the students that any ALEKS completed from 03-04-2013 to 03-24-2013 would be counted as extra credit for the fourth quarter. Each class was given a different extra credit opportunity already for the third quarter. Have a great weekend!

Week of 1-21-2013

Hello!

The students had a great week! I have been so proud of the students and the work they produce. I encourage that they keep working on getting their homework done each night. Parents, keep checking up on the students each night and double-check that assignments have been completed. My homeroom students suggested that showing parents completed homework assignments would be helpful! Also, keep working on ALEKS. Since this last Monday was a holiday, the students were only mandated to do 2 less topics than usual this week.
The sixth grade students did a fabulous job with their projects. I am so happy with the results. They are still pounding away with fractions, decimals, and percents. The seventh grade students finished up their Stretching and Shrinking unit. They will begin a similar unit, Comparing and Scaling when they return next week. The eighth grade students are looking at two forms of quadratic equations, and solving from one to the other. I encourage the 8 green students to continue practicing and looking at their ECA practice problems. I hope you all have a great weekend! Stay safe and warm.

Week of 1-14-2013

Hello!

This week was a very successful and productive week. The sixth grade classes are moving right through their unit on fractions, decimals, and percents. Their unit project, 'Fraction Sundae', will be due January 25. Thus far, those that have been turned in early look fantastic! The seventh graders are doing a tremendous job on the Stretching and Shrinking unit. Next week, they will be working on a project, taking a vocabulary quiz, and finish up their unit with a test. The eighth grade students are tackling the topic of quadratic equations. We are looking at expanded and factored form. The eighth grade "green" students received information about the ECA, which they will take in the spring. All students have been informed to get their parents signature on the information sent home. Students should still be working on ALEKS weekly. Hope you all have a good week.

Week of 01-07-2013

Welcome back!

The students have done so well this week adjusting back into the school routine. The sixth grade students are jumping right into their Fractions, Decimals, and Percents unit. They were given a notes outline and a vocabulary outline. We accomplished pretests. The students were each given, and each parent an email, the outlines to their unit project, Fraction Sundae. The seventh grade students took their pretests for the next unit, Stretching and Shrinking. They all did so well on this that I was able to greatly modify their unit lessons. We are going to dive right through this unit and have some fun. They are working really hard and doing a great job. The eighth grade students are beginning their new unit of quadratic relationships. We have tackled linear and exponential relationships. The students were given pretests, a notes outline, and a vocabulary outline.
Parents, stay tuned for information on your eighth grade student taking the ECA this spring. I have talked to majority of the eighth grade students that I would like to try taking the exam. This concerns the subject of algebra that all students will have to take in high school. This will give them a good look into what to expect in the upcoming years! As the students take their benchmark exams this week, there are two more options for them to take: algebra and geometry. There are several higher level students that will be taking these benchmarks, just to see where they fall within the subject. Many are excited and curious to see how their skills compare! I hope you all have a great weekend.
